Sloppy Joes the low sodium way

Sloppy Joes are a nice quick meal now and then. Add a few low-sodium chips and some fresh veggies and you have a quick dinner on days when you don’t have time to prepare a large meal. Almost as fast as “fast food” without the sodium load!

I start with a pound of ground beef or ground turkey. Brown the meat and then add the spices to taste and tomato sauce (no salt added). Heat through and you are ready to serve. I drain the ground beef before adding anything because the extra fat is not needed. Turkey doesn’t need to be drained because it usually doesn’t have much fat.

The tomato sauce is the no added salt variety. Onion can be used instead of onion powder but many children prefer onion powder and it is quicker. Same can be said about the garlic. I bought seasoning from the Magic Seasoning company as they have many no salt varieties. I used the barbeque flavor and it has just the flavor I was looking for. In addition I used some chili powder and the sweet pepper and garlic salt free seasoning to deepen the flavors.

Penzey’s chili powder is sodium free and the garlic and sweet pepper is also free of sodium.

The buns were the lowest sodium content I could find at the grocery store. Keep looking through all of the brands. It is surprising that some hamburger buns have nearly 400mg of sodium! The ones I found were about 100mg to 120mg per bun. Since you are not adding sodium with the spices and herbs it is not too much for the bun.

Low sodium chips or homemade chips or fries are great. If you have time you can slice potatoes and air fry them, or bake in the oven for a low sodium and low fat French fry. Fresh broccoli and carrots were easy to get ready while browning the meat. I steam my veggies until they are just slightly crunchy.

So to the recipe:

1 pound ground beef or turkey, 1 8oz can of tomato sauce no added salt, onion and garlic powder about 1/2 teaspoon each, Magic Barbecue seasoning about 2 teaspoons, garlic and sweet pepper seasoning McCormick salt free a 1/4 teaspoon. Hamburger bun.

If you are a fan of pickles on your sloppy joes, the Healthy Heart Market sells many no-salt varieties.

Enjoy!!
